Add real-time captions and language translation to your Upheal telehealth sessions using Chrome's built-in accessibility features.
Chrome's Live Caption and Live Translate features give you real-time captions and can translate them into another language during your Upheal telehealth sessions. This is helpful for participants who are hard of hearing, sessions conducted in a second language, or as a real-time speech-to-text reference.
Live Caption generates captions automatically and processes all audio locally on your device. Nothing is sent to an external server. Live Translate automatically translates those captions into your chosen language. Because translation requires processing power, captions are sent to Google for this step.
These are Chrome browser features. They work in addition to Upheal's own AI note-taking and will not change your session notes or transcripts.
To see live captions or translation in a telehealth session, you’ll need to turn these features on in Chrome.
Turn on Live Caption in Chrome
To turn on Live Caption in Chrome:
In Chrome, click the three-dot menu at the top right.
Go to Settings > Accessibility.
Toggle Live Caption on.
To caption audio in a language other than English, click Add languages next to Supported Live Caption languages.
Select the language you wish to use from the list, then click Add.
To make an added language the default for captions, click the three-dot menu next to the language of your choice and click Make default.
Now, when someone in an Upheal telehealth session begins speaking, the Live Caption window will appear automatically with real-time captions.
Turn on Live Translate in Chrome
To turn on Live Translate in Chrome:
In Chrome, click the three-dot menu at the top right.
Go to Settings > Accessibility.
Toggle Live Translate on.
Choose the language you want captions translated into from the Translate captions to dropdown.
Now, when someone in an Upheal telehealth session begins speaking, the Live Caption window will appear automatically with real-time, translated captions.
How it works during a session
Captions appear as participants speak and update in real time.
Captions are only displayed on your own device. If your client wishes to use this feature, they will need to join from a Chrome browser and follow the steps above.
Live Caption works with multiple participants in the same session.
Individual speakers aren't labeled in the caption text, but their profile picture is highlighted when they're speaking.
You can drag the caption window to any position on your screen.
To make the caption window larger or smaller, click the arrow at the bottom of the caption window.
If translation is turned on, you can change the language your captions are displayed in from the caption window by clicking the drop down menu displaying the current caption language.
Supported languages
Chrome's Live Caption can caption audio in the following languages, which are also languages you can hold Upheal sessions in:
English
Spanish
Portuguese
German
French
Italian
Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional Chinese)
Hindi
Live Translate can translate captions from these languages into many others. To see the full list of available translation languages, check the Translate captions to dropdown in your Chrome accessibility settings.
Upheal supports sessions in the 8 languages listed above. If you're working with clients in other languages supported by Chrome's Live Caption, Live Caption will still generate captions, but Upheal's AI notes may not be available in those languages.
Customize your captions
You can change the appearance of captions to make them easier to read.
To customize your captions:
In Chrome, click the three-dot menu at the top right.
Go to Settings > Accessibility.
Click Caption preferences.
Choose the appearance of your captions in your system's caption preferences.
