Watch our instructional video, or read on to learn about the browser extension.
Upheal looks different now than you'll see in this video, but the extension works the same way.
What is Upheal's browser extension?
Do you hold your sessions on a calling, video conferencing, telehealth, or EHR platform that isn’t integrated with Upheal, such as SimplePractice, Doxy.me, or Google Meet?
You can get all the benefits of using Upheal and keep holding calls on your preferred platform seamlessly. Upheal’s browser extension is our solution to easy integration with your favorite EHR and calling tools. And, you don't have to change or install anything in your EHR program.
Upheal’s browser extension lets you:
Capture the audio from any call you make within your web browser
Capture both sides of the conversation even while wearing headphones
Copy and paste all of your Upheal notes into any EHR tool without switching between browser tabs
Upheal’s browser extension is only for Google Chrome on computers (both Windows and Mac). You need to be signed in to Chrome to use the extension.
The extension isn't available on phones or tablets.
Virtual session alternative
You can also use virtual session capture for online sessions right from the Upheal web app.
Do you use a Mac computer? We highly recommend our desktop app for the best possible session capture experience.

Installing the browser extension
If you or your employer have set up strict security settings in Chrome, you might see the message “This extension is not trusted by Enhanced Safe Browsing” upon installation. Upheal’s browser extension is safe, secure, and HIPAA compliant, and it’s been officially reviewed, approved, and listed in the Chrome Web Store by Google. However, since it’s new to Chrome, Google just needs a bit more time to run the standard procedure that all new extensions are subject to, so that the extension can be officially indexed as secure.
To install:
Open Google Chrome. (It’s quick to download if you don’t already have it.)
Make sure you’re signed in to Chrome so you can add extensions.
Follow this link to our browser extension’s page in the Chrome Web Store.
Click Add to Chrome.
Click Add to Chrome again to confirm.
You don't need to do anything in your EHR or any other program. Upheal's browser extension works completely independently.
We recommend pinning the Upheal extension to your browser to make it easier to access.
To pin:
In Chrome, click on the puzzle piece icon next to the URL bar at the top of your screen.
Click on the pin icon beside the Upheal browser extension. Now, the Upheal icon will always be at the top of your screen, beside the extensions icon.
Note: The extension can be launched only in tabs that are opened (or refreshed) after it’s been installed. If you can’t open the extension, try refreshing the tab.
Capturing a session with the browser extension
If you want to use Upheal's browser extension with Jane App's video calling platform, right click on the top bar of the browser window with the call and select "show as tab".
Make sure you’re signed in to Upheal. If you were signed in when you installed the browser extension, you’ll already be automatically signed in. If not, sign in now.
Begin your call as usual. We recommend starting your call first and waiting for all parties to join before launching the extension.
In the same browser tab, click on the Upheal extension.
A tray on the right side of the screen will open, and you’ll see your most recent sessions.
To begin capturing the session, click Start session.
You’ll be asked to confirm permission for accessing your microphone. Click Allow while visiting the site (or Allow this time).
To start recording, select the client with whom you’re holding a session.
Now, the session recording starts. The side tray will close automatically, and you’ll see a small Capturing widget telling you that the session is being recorded.
To pause the recording, click the pause icon on the Capturing widget.
To resume recording, click the play icon on the Capturing widget.
Click and drag the Capturing widget to move it
When you’re ready to end the session, click the pause button on the widget, then click End Session, but don't close the extension yet. See steps 10 and 11 to ensure your session is processed.
Next, use the dropdown menus to:
Assign the session to a client
Assign pronouns (if the session was held anonymously; otherwise, this field will be automatically filled in using information from your client's chart)
Set the note template you wish to use
Assign modalities
Choose to keep the audio recording
To upload your session and get notes, click Generate note.
Remember to click Generate note after your session. Your session will not be processed or uploaded until you click Generate note, so it's important not to skip this step.
Upheal will process your session. In a few minutes, your notes will appear right there in the browser extension, where you can quickly copy and paste them. (To edit notes, go to Upheal in your browser.)
If you want to delete the session without generating a note, click Delete session. This cannot be undone, and the recording is not recoverable.
Copying and pasting notes from the browser extension
With Upheal’s browser extension, you can copy and paste session notes into your favorite EHR tool without even leaving your browser tab. This applies to all Upheal notes, regardless of whether they were processed via the extension or Upheal app.
In the browser tab where you’ll be pasting the notes, open the Upheal browser extension.
Find your session.
Click Copy note to copy the whole note, or the clipboard icons to copy one section at a time.
Paste anywhere. That’s it!
Smart Fill for your EHR
You can copy your notes from Upheal to your EHR with a single click using Smart Fill.
For Smart Fill to work, your Upheal note structure needs to match your EHR note template. The note sections must have the same names so Smart Fill can recognize them.
You can use Smart Fill with custom note templates 🎉
Smart Fill currently works with:
SimplePractice
TherapyNotes
Owl Practice
Jane App
With the browser extension open over your EHR progress note page, click Smart Fill. That's it!
