Upheal secures $10M to help reduce provider burnout and improve client outcomes with their AI-powered platform
We’re delighted to share that Upheal has raised a $10M Series A round to help create better balance for mental health professionals. The round was led by Headline with participation from Credo Ventures and Kaya Ventures, bringing our total funding to $14.35 million.
The burden on mental health professionals is a heavy one. Providers must remain fully engaged with their client, while regularly dealing with traumatic narratives and overbearing documentation requirements.
Repeatedly absorbing the emotional load while juggling administrative duties can become overwhelming, leading to burnout, reduced empathy, exhaustion, and potentially lead to reduced quality of care.
On top of feeling overworked and emotionally drained, providers often feel underpaid and undervalued. Systemic issues such as unrealistic caseloads and low pay, coupled with a challenging economic climate and increasing demand for mental health services, create a perfect storm for provider burnout.
This new funding propels our mission to alleviate provider burnout and improve client outcomes.
"Upheal addresses one of the most critical challenges society faces today: making mental healthcare more accessible. It’s a very tangible AI use case and embodies what we always hope technology can be—automation not as a replacement for humans but as an opportunity for enhancement. Therapists and patients can spend more time together, improving overall outcomes. We’re excited to support Juraj, Martin, and the Upheal team as they lead a much-needed shift towards a more balanced, efficient, and effective mental healthcare for all," said Christian Miele, General Partner at Headline.
Since our Series Seed funding announcement in February 2024, Upheal has been on a remarkable growth trajectory, with an almost threefold increase in providers using the platform.
Our reach and potential use cases extend widely, impacting individual providers, group practices, and virtual care companies alike. Notable partnerships with Alma, Cartwheel Care, Author Health, Noble Health, and Insight Counseling highlight the expanding influence of Upheal.
“Upheal has revolutionized our clinical documentation process at Cartwheel. Before Upheal, our clinicians spent up to 20% of their time on paperwork. Now, we've cut documentation time by more than half – from 15 minutes to just 7 minutes per session,”
said Julie Jungman, Cartwheel’s VP of Clinical Care. “They're not just a tool; they're an integral part of our success story. With Upheal, we're not just saving time – we're enhancing the quality of care we provide.”
Our story
CEO Juraj Chrappa’s approach to his own mental health was transformed after facing severe burnout when his son was diagnosed with a chronic oncology condition. Struggling to balance overwhelming anxiety with the challenges of a fast-paced career, Juraj realized firsthand the importance of access to mental health support.
Driven by the desire to support the mental health professionals that had helped him, he saw an opportunity to make a difference by improving the tools available to providers.
After spending over a year interviewing mental health professionals and understanding their unique challenges, he co-founded Upheal with Martin Horvath. From day one, building a platform with the highest level of security and privacy was a top priority, with the team collaborating closely with legal experts to uphold the most stringent security standards.
Together, they built a powerful platform designed to ease the administrative burden on mental health professionals, helping them achieve a healthier work-life balance and enhancing effectiveness, empathy, and overall well-being.
“Providers must have complete confidence in any product that handles sensitive data, which is why we are deeply committed to privacy and security. We never store recordings, and users maintain full control over the duration that generated insights remain on the platform,” said Martin. “We do not sell any data, even in anonymized form, to third parties. Our platform meets the highest security standards and is fully HIPAA and SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, undergoing regular audits by independent auditors.”
With a recent study showing that therapists spend over 30% of their time on documentation alone, it's obvious to see why overbearing paperwork requirements can increase burnout and prevent providers from focusing on their clients.
Upheal was designed to change that by directly helping mental health professionals save time and maximize efficiency. With a 55% reduction in session processing time since our seed stage announcement, Upheal providers can now work even more efficiently.
By handling the repetitive admin tasks, our platform frees up time, reduces burnout, and allows providers to handle their caseloads, enhance their practice, and reduce stress.
“This product has given me the opportunity to love almost every part of my job because it does the parts that I hate. My clients love it too.”
Aymee Condie, LCSW
With providers saving up to 40 hours per month on paperwork and over 36,000 mental health professionals now having access to Upheal's AI-powered platform, we're delighted to see the profound impact our product is making across the mental health industry.
Our vision
This latest round of funding allows us to scale our impact and expand the team with strategic hires across clinical operations, product and engineering, and customer support. We're excited to announce the recent addition of Nick Neral as our new Head of Sales.
Nick has held multiple sales leadership roles in mental health, including leading business development at a telehealth platform through the pandemic, and most recently as Director of Marketplace at Healthie.
"I'm excited to join Upheal after six years of working alongside community mental health centers, therapists, and virtual care organizations. The sentiment among providers in this country right now is they just want to be able to focus on care," said Nick. "Meeting the team at Upheal confirmed for me that this is a company truly dedicated to ethically reducing therapists’ administrative burden so they can get back to focusing on care."
While many traditional software solutions for mental health providers, such as EHRs, are cumbersome and difficult to navigate, Upheal offers an intuitive, user-friendly design that simplifies admin tasks, scheduling, and note-taking.
This streamlined approach gives providers more time to manage caseloads, boost incomes, or engage in self care while producing high-quality notes which reduce the stress associated with insurance audits.
“It’s like having a personal assistant. My stress levels are lowered by Upheal. $150 a month for a personal assistant is a dream come true. I’d like to make Upheal my full EHR.”
Matthew Howe, MA, LPC
