Anonymous or unassigned sessions: Holding sessions without specifying a client

How to hold a session without a client profile

Written by Aviva Glassman

Do you use Upheal for notes, but you store your client profiles in another EHR? Or, you want to get session notes and insights from Upheal, but you don't want to create client profiles or store any client identification information? You can hold sessions without attaching them to any particular client.

What session types can be anonymous?

Anonymous or unassigned sessions are available for all session types:

Remember, you still need to collect consent for data processing from all clients, regardless of if they have a profile in Upheal.

Holding an anonymous session (non-telehealth)

Anonymous sessions work just like regular sessions, but you select an Anonymous client rather than a specific one. These instructions apply to all session types except for Upheal telehealth sessions.

  1. Start your session as usual.

  2. When you choose the client, select Anonymous individual or Anonymous couple.

  3. Hold the session (or generate the note based on a summary or recording).

Once the session is processed, you'll find it on the Sessions page as usual.

That's it! Now, you can copy and paste your notes into your EHR or other storage. If you use Upheal's browser extension, you can do it all in one browser tab.

Holding an anonymous telehealth session

Making a telehealth session anonymous happens at the end of the session:

  1. Hold the telehealth session as usual. When your client joins, they'll enter their email address, but Upheal won't retain it or automatically create a profile for them without your input.

  2. Once you've ended the session, you'll be able to choose the client. Click Select from existing clients.

  3. Click on the dropdown below Existing client, and select Anonymous individual or Anonymous couple.

  4. Once all the other details are set correctly, click Generate note.

The note will be available on your Sessions page as usual.

Good to know about anonymous sessions

  • Treatment plans with Golden Thread progress tracking can't be generated based on unassigned sessions; your clients need to have profiles for that. If you'd like to use this feature while maintaining anonymity, you can create pseudonymous profiles for your clients.

  • Though you can always choose Anonymous individual and Anonymous couple when assigning a session, no "anonymous client" will be listed on your Clients page. Anonymous sessions can be found on your Sessions page along with sessions that are assigned to clients.

  • You can assign an anonymous session to a client any time.
